Mike Preston, a writer of some popularity, becomes involved with a law firm that is trying to locate the descendant of Poppy Mallory, as an inheritance of hundreds of millions will go to the person in question. There are many candidates and Mike must work out Poppy's history to find out the true heir. Mike delves into Poppy's journals and discovers Poppy's troubled background with an abusive father, her love for unsuitable men, her connections to a crime family, and her riches gained by her own business.

Throughout the novel we learn more about Poppy's life, letting the reader try to 'guess' who might inherit
