Underlying messages also tend to reinforce outdated patriarchal gendering patterns in spite of the presence of a female protagonist. Rihanna is overly concerned with appearance and self control, her father speaks for the family, and her mother cooks, sews and performs household chores with Rihanna's help. With the exception of Eris' apprenticeship to Rhianna's father, occupations are gendered along traditional lines. All mages are male, and it is assumed Rihanna can't control her wild (female) magic. She is instructed to wear a charm that drains her power although the old simpleton was never given a similar charm. Rihanna's action in the story is entirely defensive. She befriends the old man, but that is described in maternal terms and she is ultimately saved by his magic not her own.« less
