I didn't really care for this book. The father, who got "jailhouse religion" was repulsive to me. He did not love his wife at the beginning of the book and that remained unchanged at the end of the book. He was a womanizer and a drunk before going to prison and salvation didn't seem to make a new creature of him to me. Yes he quit his drinking, but he hadn't been back home very long before he took up with another woman who was the mother of his daughter's best friend. His tryst to the graveyard behind the church to make out with her really put me off. His sensual side definitely had the upper hand over his spiritual side.
This was my first time reading this author and it wont be my last time.I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a story about a father with three children who has a drinking problem and one night has an accident which ends him in jail. Upon his release he goes home to try to put the pices of his family back toghere, he finds he has a wife hes not sure he loves anymore, his youngest daughter dosent even know who he is, his oldest daughter has a drinking problem, and is son has down sndroym.Its his son who tries to keep this family toghtere.When an accident occurs one night on the lake thats when this family realizes how much they need each other.
I loved this series so much that I have started ordering any Ann Tatlock book that I can. I am sending them all along to my sister, who, after reading them will put them back into paper back swap, I'm sure (if not passing them along to friends). Ann Tatlock is a writer that keeps you so into the book that you are reading that it is hard to put them down!
I truly believe that the author is trying to show us Grace, and she did a fine job. Kept me glued from the start and to the finish. We are not perfect, only human saved by our Lord's Grace!

This is a hard story to read because it's so true to real life. After 5 years in prison John returns to a family that has learned to live without him. The only one who truly accepts him is his Down Syndrome son. In prison John had accepted Christ in his life but he was totally unprepared as to how to live as a Christian in the outside world & immediately fell back into sin. At the same time his family was quickly falling apart. But words from a pastor & a determination to do what was right helped John keep reaching out to his family. Finally a situation that could have been tragic became the turning point for the whole family. This could be the story of many of my friends. "A little child shall lead them..."
