I read this book for a history class on European women during the renaissance. I loved it. I actually was sad at the end. I also felt like an awful miscarriage of justice had been done. I felt sorry for Bertrande. I couldn't imagine living through what she had to. Particularly what happened to her and the Martin that she came to love.

Read this before you rent the movie.

Did not enjoy this book. It is like a term paper with much in Latin and French.

This book was great! Seeing the movie first helped me follow along better and gave me a good visual (dirty peasants!) The plot kept me in suspense to the end- I almost thought he would get away with it and lead a happy ever after.
