I loved this book, I think mostly at how vividly the story is told despite the confusion of an older english than we now speak. While the language caused me to stumble quite a bit, I still related with the characters at a deep level, could picture everything as it happened quite vividly, and felt the tension and emotions throughout.

Characterized as horror, it only qualifies as such due to the time of the writing, I think. Really, it is based in a supernatural event, and while there are tense thrills at times, there's nothing scary about it. Arthur Lawford is a tragic but very understandable guy with troubles many readers can relate to, I'm sure. I think this would be great fodder for a book club reading - one of those books that is far more enjoyable when discussed and analyzed to see what details, conclusions, and insight other readers clue into.

I waited so long for a copy of this book that I forgot how I stumbled onto it. But glad I did - worth the wait.
