Resolution - Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, Bk 2
Author: Robert B. Parker
"I had an eight-gauge shotgun that I'd taken with me when I left Wells Fargo. It didn't take too long for things to develop. I sat in the tall lookout chair in the back of the saloon with the shotgun in my lap for two peaceful nights. On my third night it was different. I could almost smell trouble beginning to cook." — After the bloody confronta...  more »

Rarely, can I claim that I enjoy the sequel more then the original but Robert Parker delivers in Resolution. The story was not as original this time around but it is much more compelling. The relationship between Virgil Cole and Everitt Hitch is explored throughout the book adding much needed depth to our hereos. Parker packs the story with action, adventure and romance but it is the friendship angle of Cole and Hitch that keeps me reading. Hopefully, Mr. Parker will not end the adventures of Cole and Hitch just yet as I am longing to learn more about them and from them. I do believe in this case that Author knows best. You can read this novel as a stand alone but I suggest starting with Appaloosa.

In my opinion, this was a better written western than the first one in the series, Appaloosa. Virgil and Everett have each others back like Spencer and Hawk; and have totally different personalities. Parker gives them a very dry sense of humor. Perhaps men were like that in the old west. My husband and I both enjoyed this storyline. I think Ellie comes back in the next book in the series, Brimstone. It was refreshing not to have her in this western tale.

Of the three books about guns-for-hire, Cole and Hitch, this is the best. All three books, Appaloosa, Resolution and Brimstone are wonderful, but this is the very best. The dialogue by Robert Parker is a text book of how to use a little and make it go a long way. The characters are layered and the action always satisfies. I cannot recommend the book enough.

The western lives!

Another fast-moving portrait of Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch. Parker is an estimable dialogue maven in the same class as Elmore Leonard, perhaps even more tightly written and laconic. If you enjoy a Western adventure with finely drawn characters and swift and deadly action, Parker's Cole & Hitch series is for you. Along with Volume #1 - "Appaloosa" -- the movie by the same name is a fine illustration of Parker's writing. The fine casting of Ed Harris as Virgil Cole and Viggo Mortensen as Everett Hitch will give you a vivid portrait of the two gunmen as you work your way through the series of books.

I usually really like Robert B. Parker; this book was the exception. I could not even get half way through. It's a western (if you haven't guessed), and I have no problem with westerns. But it is just one boring chapter after another. You know they're heading to a climax or showdown but it's so predictable it's silly.

Not only a good read but, with luck, this "Appaloosa" sequel will some day become a movie. Parker proved to be more than a detective novelist with this series.
