I first read this book when it came out in 1989 and only recently read it again. It is a great addition to the history of Pern and it's descendents from old Earth. To go from a technological society to an agrarian and partially back is quite and adventure. I recommend reading all of McCaffery's books in chronological order

Deals with those who were holdless, for a variety of reasons, during the beginning years of Threadfall. Almost the same period as DragonDrums but from different viewpoints. Sets up just right for the following book, All the Weyrs of Pern. Looking forward to it.
Nothing bad but nothing really great. If you wanted to know what happens to Peimur, this is the book for you though.

"The Renegades of Pern" continues the story begun in "Dragonflight" and is the first one to be primarily about ordinary people on Pern, not dragonriders or harpers. It ends with the discovery of the computer system that will lead to finally defeating the planet-wide threat of "Thread."
I had read my paperback copy so many times that it was falling apart and I was glad to replace it with a hardback.
