This romance kind of fits into Palmers Long Tall Texans series, and it focuses on the romance between two very damaged people: police chief Cash Grier and model/actress Tippy Moore. These characters were previously mentioned in Palmers book Lawless, so reading that beforehand might help, as Tippys character undergoes a lot of development between the two books. In Lawless, shes a spoiled Hollywood celebrity; in Renegade, shes an unassuming actress with a lot of skeletons in her closet and a younger brother shes desperately trying to protect from her mother and stepfather.

Ive railed against Palmers writing before, but here she crafts an interesting character study of two people who are afraid to fall in love with each other. Tippys story is beyond heartbreaking: repeatedly raped at the hands of her mothers boyfriend, Tippy becomes afraid of men in a literal sense. Cashs father sent him off to military school after his stepmother spread lies about him. Both deeply distrust each other and the opposite sex in general. Rory, Tippys brother, tries to play matchmaker between the two.

The book does suffer somewhat from pedestrian writing; Palmer has a habit of repeating phrases and words over and over again. Like author Lori Wick, Palmer also introduces many minor characters (some of whom are residents of her fictitious town, Jacobsville, TX) but they dont add anything to the story. Apart from that, this book is less superficial than some of her other books and the bonds that Tippy and Cash develop over the course of the story make this book worth seeking out.

Loved it. I have recently discovered Diana Palmer and I am reading everything she writes. This is one of the best. Just like real life. Ups and downs.

I love historical fiction, especially old west-type novels. So I was not surprised to find that I was drawn to this Texas adventure even though the setting is present-day. Diana Palmer gives life to her characters and pizzazz to her plot. There were several fairly explicit love scenes to take into account when recommending this book, but otherwise it was a fast, enjoyable read.

I wanted to like this book since I loved Lawless (prequel to Renegade), but sadly I didn't. Tippy, the heroine (and the anti-heroine in Lawless) just never sat well with me.

Cash Grier makes it his personal mission to keep law & order in the streets of Jacobsville.A renegade, Cash never takes anything at face value, especially not gorgeous women like actress Tippy Moore. Both people with hard lives behind them & challenging days ahead - both with closets full of skeletons, the two survive heartbreaking setbacks only to move forward one step - one day - one moment at a time to luxuriate in the wealth of newfound supportive friends, the rediscovery of family & the strongest bond in the world - totally dedicated love.
