Seventh gradeâ"junior highâ"is not so great for the motherless Alice McKinley. At first it was because of the lockers, and having to change for P.E., and being pushed along in the crowded hallways. But then as she got used to that, it's because one major obstacle stands in the way of her goal of being Likable Alice: the bully, Denise Whitlock.

Meanwhile, Alice's father and her older brother Lester have both got girl problems, and it seems as if Alice can never do anything right when it comes to trying to help them. For example, it DEFINITELY wasn't the greatest idea in the world to set her dad up on a blind date with Miss Summers, her Language Arts teacher. Not even if they have a great time.

Or is it? Perhaps Aliceâ"whom a soon-to-be friend will describe as âgutsyââ"and her slightly impulsive moves will make everything better in the end.

Once again, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor delivers another great book about Alice.
