Durrell's account of post-WWII Rhodes is rich in sensuous detail, evocative imagery, and historical perspective. His description of the sweetness of life and the tragedy of war make this much more than a travel text. Because of Durrell's writing, I set of myself for Greece years ago, and found it all very familiar because of his rich language. This is a gorgeous book that will take you far away...
