The Reed of God
Author: Caryll Houselander
First published over half a century ago, Caryll Houselander's The Reed of God is a spiritual classic that deserves to be rediscovered by a whole new generation of readers. Caryll Houselander was a Catholic writer, who had a period of fame in the 1940's & 1950's and is sadly not so well known today. She wrote several excellent books about the faith (I strongly recommend her autobiography, A ROCKING HORSE CATHOLIC).

THE REED OF GOD is a lovely book about the Blessed Mother, interpreting her life and her (all too few) words. It is simply written, as are all of Houselander's books, and by this I mean it's not overwhelmingly intellectual and a boring "tome" about Catholicism that beats a drum. The author's faith is intelligent, informed, and reverent, yet you get the feeling that she is writing for real people - not just the religious ones. Houselander's faith is, still, alive and important, and this book is worth reading.
