This is the story of a group of school friends now in middle age. They rally round a member when she fears her husband is cheating on her.
The characters are likable and real. The plot is well constructed. It slips from present to past with ease. Smith has serious themes, but her style is also quite funny. I laughed out loud a couple of times.

We started out in the late '60s as mademoiselles, self-proclaimed creme de la creme of Atlanta's North Side High, Dike's High, Westminster and Lovett, full of ourselves and drunk with the power of our blooming sexuality and good looks," says Georgia Baker, the first-person narrator of Smith's (Queen Bee of the Mimosa Branch, etc.) cozy tribute to the South and womanhood in general. Still full of themselves but now older and wiser, Georgia, Teeny, Linda, Diane and SuSu meet once a month, wearing purple clothes and (what else?) red hats. When Diane discovers that her husband has a mistress, a condo and hidden funds, she seeks her friends' help to bring him down. Meanwhile, Georgia grapples with memories of her first love and the reality of her stale marriage, and Teeny reevaluates her conviction to stay with her abusive, womanizing husband. The women's trials are familiar, but Smith's incisive wit and awareness of her setting, coupled with Darlow's dynamic, Southern-accented delivery and skill at creating distinct character voices-from SuSu's husky, smoke-roughened voice to the righteous, prissy voice of Georgia's conscience-will make listeners feel like an honorary member of the club.

A fun book. Lots of "Southernisms". A story about friendship among women. I didn't expect to like it and was really surprised.

I always love reading about a group of women who take lemons dished out by others and squeeze them until they have lemonade. The feisty group does just that.

A wonderful novel about five women who join a red hat club. This book has all the fun of five who gossip and have fun.
Although the title makes this book seem dated (Red Hat Clubs have been around a long time), the story line is timeless. Jilted wives who won't take it any more - they decide to fight back. Their investigations and negotiations make for a funny plot and there are just enough southernisms by this Atlanta author to keep a reader happy.
A crazy group of women if ever there were. So human.

This is a really great read! It teaches a life lesson to women of all ages. These women have overcome divorce, spreading waistlines, and all other kinds of trials and tribulations! They lived to tell about it too! A must read for any woman!
