Wow. This book was put into final edits a few days before Bhutto was assassinated. She gives a beautiful analysis (with examples) of how she thinks Islam is firmly compatible with Democracy. For instance, most non-Arab Muslim states are doing quite well with the democratic experiment. She also cites some pretty strong evidence for the interference of the West in hampering democracy in not only the Middle East, but also in Latin America and elsewhere. What I love best is her detailed account of reconciliation politics after the 1947 partition of India into Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India and her own family's time spent in jail and working to form a democratic infrastructure. Very personal, very thought-provoking.
