I'm pretty sure I read this book about 20 years ago because a lot of it's familiar but also a little fuzzy. (You know how romance novels can blend one into another...) However, it's still a good read and gets you hooked from the beginning. This one made me laugh and cry and not want to put it down.

Caroline Richmond has been living in Boston with her uncle and his family since she was a small child. Suddenly, her father sends word that she must return to him in England. When Jered Marcus Benton, the Duke of Bradford, meets Caroline for the first time, she threatens to shoot his horse. Soon he discovers that she is protecting a friend of his from bandits. He is immediately drawn to the fiesty American. Caroline doesn't realize that her father sent her to Boston to keep her safe. Her father doesn't realize that the danger isn't over. Caroline is still a target. Jered discovers this and is determined to protect her for though he doesn't trust her, he does feel something for her and will kill whoever dares to keep her from him.
Caroline is intelligent, witty, and strong. She determines to make the best of any situation and is a very likable character. Jered is dark, sullen, and handsome. The kind of man you want to peel back the exterior and find what has him brooding beneath.

I don't understand other reviews not liking this book. In fact it IS one of my favorite Garwood books. Caroline is strong, sassy and sweet. She loves and wants to break this arrogant man, because she knows the love he is capable of. That's where the "battle" lies. This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Because they are both strong willed, some of the dialogue between them is hillarious which makes the romance between them even better you can just feel it! Enjoy the read

Caroline was born in England but raised in America by her Aunt and Uncle. She is sent there under mysterious circumstances that are revealed at the end. When she finally returns to England and her father she causes a stir among the men and meets up with the Duke of Bradford who cannot get enough of her. The main characters don't agree on a woman's place in relationships which causes many arguments. The Duke is obsessively jealous which is also not explained until the end.

I enjoyed the humor and the relationship between Caroline and the Duke's best friend (Milford). A light read and enjoyable.

You can't miss with a Julie Garwood book, haven't come across one yet that isn't an excellent read. Well developed storylines and characters always give her books a fullness in reading. An excellent read.

Caroline Richmond was sent away from by father in England to live with her uncle in Boston when she was four years old. She grew up happily on a farm there and came to think of her uncle and aunt as her parents and her cousins as family. She never knew why her father had sent her away, and after fourteen years she'd stoped wondering. But when her real father sends for her to return to England life as she knows it is turned upside down.

While in England Caroline meets the Duke of Bradford. She instantly takes a disliking to him, yet finds herself oddly attracted to him at the same time. Bradford has never met another woman quite like Caroline, and although he doesn't trust that she's really as innocent as she seems, he still vows to have her.

When someone begins threatening Caroline, Bradford and Caroline must work together to end the threats. But Bradford doesn't trust Caroline or his own emotions enough to make things go smoothly.

Of all the dukes in England, Jered Marcus Benton, the Duke of Bradford, was the wealthiest, most handsome-and most arrogant. And of all London's ladies, he wanted the tender obedience of only one-Caroline Richmond.

This was a great book full of intrigue and romance. Jared has to save Caroline from a killer who has been after her since she was a baby, and Caroline has to get Jared to admit that he loves her. A wonderful read, I highly recommend it!

Deception, intrigue and scintillating scenes between the hero and the heroine -- it's all here....!!!! A wonderful regency.

These were two of the most stubborn characters I have ever read; a little open communication could have solved everything = but then, where would our story be?

This is a re-issued book. So unless the author has made changes - it was originally published in 1986.
(It's good though!)

The only bad part about reading Julie Garwood's books is that I have read every one of them and there are no more of her wonderful books. I enjoyed all of her books and could not wait for the next. Ms Garwood writes about the time line I love and is gifted. I would highly recommend all of writings.
