This book was so poorly written and edited, I thought I was reading a high school term paper. This was surprising from a professional writer with 50+ books to his credit. There was interesting information on the Black Hills gold rush, the founding of Deadwood, and the breaking of the treaty with the Lakota Indians. I learned some background on Al Swearengen and Seth Bullock, two people I had never heard of before the "Deadwood" TV series. The information on the other characters, such as Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane, was pretty generic and limited. One of the better chapters was on the hard life led by Deadwood prostitutes and the crude methods of birth control they used.
This book gave me some background on the historical Deadwood and made me appreciate the TV series better. If you are a fan of the TV series and want a little bit of history of the real Deadwood, this is a quick and easy read. But, it's no great literary work.
