This morning (3 July) a long-time Labor back-bencher was interviewed several on the BBC because he had unexpectedly been promoted to the shadow cabinet in the political turmoil and jockeying for position after the advisory vote in favor of leaving the EU. The MP feels his unsought promotion is not a bad thing given his long experience, having campaigned as a lad aged ten for Clement Atlee's Labor Party in 1945 and further noted that Lord Palmerston's great age when he serving as Prime Minister.
While this book is well-written and long served as reading for college students, those to whom Lord Palmerston, or Atlee for that matter, is an unfamiliar name would be better served with a basic text. Here the political evens of these years are related as from a series of lectures. Returning via bus and subway from work today, I opened the book at Chapter 8, section one (The Decline of Torey Domination in England, page 215) and found it a pleasant journey traveling with Professor Artz, continuing into the section on France. Charles X, Louis XVI's brother, was truly an inept ruler, leading those with business interest to find common cause with Bonapartist elements.
Of course, the British government was no better when after passing Catholic Emancipation, they trimmed the voting rolls in Ireland from 200,000 to 26,000, further contributing to the unrest.
Good index and the biographical notes of 1934 are updated 1958-1973 in this copy.
There being zero posted and zero wishes, I left this on the book truck at the VA Hospital where it will find a discerning reader within a day or so.
