There is more here than meets the eye. Ravenor is the student of Gregor Eisenhorn, and his style reflects his mentor's in many ways. He perhaps goes a bit further and makes some dumber choices, but he gets things done in the end. This is a more thoughtful, less action-oriented version of Eisenhorn the person. The book, though, is full of action, as are most 40k stories. The team that Ravenor put together (some of them old familiar friends from Eisenhorn) is top-notch, and it's interesting to see how they work together to solve problems and help each other survive impossible odds. This is the conclusion of the series, and there are a few surprises as well as less than satisfying parts to it. But it ends up a lot like real life, as most of Dan's books do. All the loose ends are nicely wrapped up, but I wonder... will there be more someday?

Highly recommended Dan Abnett fiction!
