When I heard MaryLu Tyndall was coming out with a sequel to her Legacy of the Kings Pirates series, I was ecstatic. Having greatly enjoyed the series, I was excited to see what kind of story MaryLu would come up with next. The Ransom features the son of Captain Edmund Merrick Hyde and Lady Charlisse, though they dont make an appearance in this book. With that being said, you could totally read this book and be able to follow along without having read the entire series. However, I would highly suggest reading the entire series because MaryLu Tyndall writes the best swashbuckling romance there could be!

MaryLu Tyndall did a great job of bringing us back in time and showing us the world of Port Royal through Julianas eyes. I loved the romance, I loved the humor and I loved the historical detail. MaryLu continues to outdo herself with each new novel. I can hardly wait between each release. I am so honored to be a part of her Motley Crew and I look forward to reading each new book MaryLu Tyndall writes.

Wow, this book had my FULL attention from the first page!! This is definitely a MUST READ for 2014 and a definite treasure for my bookshelves! I didn't consider this book to be a page turner and I took my time reading it as the story was so utterly enjoyable for me. Juliana is an amazing woman, but she is stressed in the story holding together her father's business and her household. I even became somewhat tired of her distress at one point because she was unable to relax and the only time she felt good was when she played the violin late at night. There's no Captain Sparrow in this book, but Lord Munthrope is a perfect substitute! He had me in stitches with his antics and personality yet all the while helping Juliana in unexpected ways. Just loved his character. Then there's the Pirate Earl who's not your typical pirate. He keeps his reputation intact by being feared by all other pirates and plundering other ships, but he surprises the reader with his gentemanly ways and also helps Juliana when she needs it most. He is mysteriously dangerous yet safe at the same time.
Captain Nichols was a beast and it was interesting to see that despite his solid reputation, he is the true villain in the story and the person Juliana is able to see through the easiest. Despite Rowan's irresponsible ways, my heart went out to him in his addictions and helplessness.
The end really surprised me. The Pirate Earl's encounter with God was a strange one, but was relieved at the results. Also, couldn't BELIEVE what happened to the orphanage and was very satisfied how Juliana and her friends found shelter. Those earthquakes were so terrifying and well described. No one writes pirates like Tyndall and even though there are uncomfortable scenes in the story, it is perfectly written, tangible, authentic, filled with hope, great romantic tension, and so very entertaining!!! And I kept looking at the cover as I read :) I also loved, LOVED the language, SOOOOO well done! I hated the injustice, but simply loved how every part of the story served its purpose and kept me glued to its pages. Highly, highly recommend to all readers, you'll quickly be wanting to read more of Tyndall's books after finishing this one :)

Swashbuckling at its best!
About ten years ago I discovered the amazing fact of Christian pirate stories through the books of Linda Chaikin. I honestly thought that after I had read all of her books that my days of sailing the Spanish Main were over.... and then I discovered MaryLu Tyndall's Legacy Of The King's Pirates series and once again I was walking the decks and smelling the salt breeze.
I have enjoyed each of the MaryLu Tyndall books I have read, and The Ransom was no exception. There are great characters, an intriguing time in history and location, a beautiful damsel in distress, a handsome pirate, treasure, betrayal, danger, and romance. Gosh, what more could I need?!
The main characters each struggle with much the same things. Expectations from family, betrayal, and what faith is really about. MaryLu Tyndall combines a no-holds-barred approach to spiritual truths with her own excellent writing skills that I find completely refreshing in today's Christian fiction market.
One of my favorite parts of The Ransom is the earthquake that that makes a rather, shall we say, noticeable appearance. The earthquake really did strike Port Royal in 1692 and divers are continually discovering new things about the city before. I am one of the nutty people that enjoys reading about earthquakes and hurricanes so when coupled with a great story it sucked me in like tsunami.
Do not miss any of the books in this series but especially do not miss out on The Ransom! You can read this one before the others, it is something of a standalone and has only a few small spoilers.

MaryLu Tyndall is known as the queen of pirate fiction. Personally I love her writing and can't wait until her next novel arrives!! They are always well written and the characters feel realistic. I mean, I would love to meet the Pirate Earl or Julianna in person:) That Pirate Earl could be a bit annoying at times and he was going through trials of his own but man alive, this hero is quite a dashing one!
Julianna is the daughter of a shipping merchant who is slowly dying. Her mother is long gone and though she has a brother he is pretty much a wastrel, going through their money easily while gambling. So Julianna is left to running the shipping company without letting anyone else know that a woman is in charge. Else they will lose their business. In the midst of all this she has a Navy captain pursuing her and so she accepts the proposal from a popping jay named Munny. He will announce their engagement and keep Captain Nichols off her back and at the same time she will help him keep his father at bay.
The scenes in this book are so well written I could almost feel myself there on the water, or standing in the gardens. And yes, the tavern scenes are just as well fleshed out:) MaryLu has such a way of writing that you can see the gowns on these women and feel the breeze blowing. Maybe even smell the water? And the characters are so entertaining!! Munny is such a hoot and I found myself laughing over him at times. The Pirate Earl is so endearing in all his struggles with life and the search for true peace. Julianna is one of those double characters that is strong and yet so vulnerable at the same time. Sweet and charming but able to stand up to people. She has her struggles of trying to win approval from God by doing more and more for others. And then when she finds herself falling in love with Munny I had to laugh.
There are many twists and turns along the way but it was a great trip. If you like a good pirate story, I would urge you to pick this one up. Excellent novel MaryLu!!
