1) I am actually surprised a Grisham book is going to make my Top 5 list of 2007. Oh, but it is. This was a fantastic book. The characters and plot were so well developed, it was really tough putting this book down. The story is typical Grisham. A young lawyer graduates from Memphis State. He has no money and no job. In order to make ends meet, he is forced to work for the sleaziest lawyer in town. But he takes with him a case against an insurance company that, if he gets lucky, could mean millions in punitive damages. His luck is not in his favor when the sleazy lawyer disappears and leaves Rudy and a paralegal named Deck, to start up an office of their own and take the case against one of the toughest law firms in Memphis. Grisham does the layman justice by explaining law in a way anyone can understand. I always take something away from a Grisham book. The action does not stop until the end of this one. And I have to say I was surprised but definitely satisfied with the ending. A must read!

Vintage John Grisham. He's a young lawyer who does yard work in exchange for rent. Then one little case begins to explode.... Grisham never fails to satisfy.

It is Grisham - what else can ya say? At least this one has an ending and not just a mish-mash of new characters used to disguise the fact that he cannot close. One believable character. He should be tied to a chair and caused to repeat completethesory, completethestory, completethestory 1004 times.

If you've read Grisham at all, you pretty much know what you're getting yourself into here. This is as good as any of the others. He knows how to tell a compelling story from the world surrounding the legal system. There's a reason the guy has made as much money as he has.

A young lawyer who does yard work in exchange for rent. He has only one job: an insurance dispute that leaves a family devastated and opens the door for a lawsuit.
As always, John Grisham weaves a story more and more tightly until you are entangled in the story and have to see how it ends.

A John Grisham classic. Better than the movie. A great read for a long trip on the airplane or train because it keeps you turning the pages. Grisham's details and rich characters are compelling. I definitely recommend this book to Grisham fans or newbies alike!

Everyone knows that screenplays are not always true to the book or clumsily truncated versions, but I enjoyed the movie by this name. However, the book is one of my favorite John Grisham novels. Mixing legal and insurance (as they do in the real world) and revealing the relationship between the two and the real lives that get mangled in the process strikes an authentic chord with anyone who's had to deal with such issues, and makes the rest of us shudder because but for the grace of God . . . And Mr. Grisham makes the characters easy to identify with or villify. Of, course we are (as we should be) left none the worse for the read and always with hope.

How wonderful it is to read a book that has everything. This book has emotion, action and drama. There were parts of the book that were hilarious. It is well written and has those off the wall details that make the book very entertaining. The characters feel real. So how could I stop reading it with all these qualities?

He's a young lawyer who does yard work in exchange for rent. Yhen on little case begins to explode....
It's summer in Memphis. The sweat is sticking to Rudy Baylors shirt and creditors are nipping at his heels. Once he had aspirations of breezing through law school and puching his ticket to the good life. Now he doesn't have a job or a prayer...except for one: an insurance dispute that leaves a family devestated and opens the door for a lawsuit, if Rudy can find a way to file it.

By the time Rudy gets to court, a heavyweight corporate defense team is there to meet him. And suddenly he is over his head, plunged into a nightmare of lies and legal maneuverings. A case that started small is exploding into a thunderous million-dollar war of nerves, skill and outright violence - a fight that could cost one young lawyer his life, or turn him into the biggest rainmaker in the land...

Wonderful Book! I have reread this several times.
The story of a young man barely out of law school who finds himself taking on one of the most powerful, corrupt, ruthless companies in America and exposing a complex , multibillion dollar insurance scam.
In the final semester of law school Rudy Baylor is required to provide free legal advice to a group of senior citizens, and it is there that he meets his first " clients", Dot and Buddy Black. Their son Donny Ray is dying of leukemia, and their insurance company has flatly refused to pay for his first skeptical, he soon realized that the Blacks really have been shockingly mistreated by the largest insurance frauds anyone's ever heard seen and one of the most lucrative and important cases in the history of civil litigation. The problem is Rudy's flat broke, has no job, hasn't even passed the bar, and is about to go head to head with one of the best defenxe attorney and powerful industries in America.

"The author expertly crafts the complex struggles of a law school student graduating and passing his bar exam and then taking on his first cases. The book has incredible one liner humor that stopped me in my reading tracks and had me laughing out loud. The characters in this book are colorful and you want to know what is going to happen to them."
