RIDDLES CLASS 6/7 STANDARD PACIFICS (Locomotives in Detail)
RIDDLES CLASS 6/7 STANDARD PACIFICS - Locomotives in Detail Author:David Clarke In January 1951, the first of 999 BR Standard locomotives emerged from Crewe Works. Designed by R. A. Riddles, No 70000 - later named Britannia - was the first of 65 Class 6/7 Pacific locomotives to be constructed as part of the program: a total of 55 'Britannias' along with 10 'Clans'. Destined, as a result of the Modernisation Plan of 1955 and... more » the declining need for traction after the Beeching cuts were made, to have a relatively short career, the 'Britannia' class in particular was to prove successful as mixed traffic design, seeing operation over much of the BR network, including such prestigious services as the 'Golden Arrow' from London to Dover. With construction being completed by 1954, many of the locomotives had barely a decade of service before withdrawals commenced in the early 1960s. Two of the 65 - both 'Britannias'- survive in preservation although there are plans to build a brand-new 'Clan'.
In his third contribution to Ian Allan Publishing's new 'Locomotives in Detail' series, David Clarke provides a reference work for the modeler and historian to the two classes involved. As with the earlier volumes, the book includes highly detailed 4mm scale drawings along with a comprehensive selection of both color and mono photographs that illustrate the considerable variety of livery carried by the locomotives during their careers and the detail differences that marked out each individual locomotive at particular dates.
With the model railway market growing and with the proprietary manufacturers producing ever better and more finely-detailed models, the needs of the enthusiast and modeler for ever more detailed information grows in parallel. And this is what the new 'Locomotives in Detail' series provide - a comprehensive and detailed guide to the locomotive class featured for the modeler and historian.« less
