Very good book. I got this book from PBS just to try something different. I found that it was the first of many in this series after I had the book in my hands. I am for sure going to find the rest of the books in this series.

The way that Sarah and Sylvia come to be more then just employer and employee. To see both of them grow and learn from each other and to see them become very good friends. To listen in on all the family history that Sylvia has to impart to explain why she is still mad at her sister in law and then to come to terms with her past and to again connect with her sister in law was really good.

I also liked the quilting references although I am not a quilter. I found myself reading instead of watching the TV or movies we had rented this was such a good book and so well written that I just did not want to put it down. Now I have to see if I can find the next book in the series so I can see what will happen next to this wonderful bunch of people.

The first in a series of books about an older woman Sylvia and a younger woman Sarah . It takes place in an old victorian home after Sylvia's sister dies. The author incredibly weaves a wonderful story involving quilting and the history of the time. It is a MUST read book but beware you wont want to PUT IT DOWN!!! For a synopsis and look at all the books in the series go to www.elmcreek.net.

I really enjoyed this book. I am delighted to have found a new series to read. This is the first book in a series of 14, so far...

An elderly woman comes back to her family home and hires a young man and his wife to help her put the grounds and house back in order. She developes a friendship with the wife through teaching her to quilt. The wife helps the older lady regain some friendships with local people that she has be estranged from for many years.

I won't tell you the ending...but it's really great...and launches you into wanting to read the next one as soon as you can get your hands on it! :)

This was a pleasant story... Not an extremely sophisticated story, but a nice read. It's a story about friendship between two unlikely characters. Some of the situations in the book were over-simplified, but if you can overlook that, you'll enjoy the story. I didn't realize that this book was the first in a series, until I completed the book. I will check out the rest of the series.

Fun, easy read. The first in the series and I've already started getting the rest. As a newby quilter I enjoyed the quilting references, but most of all enjoyed the character development and look forward to watching them as they move on. Great escapism on a rainy day!

This series is awesome, I have read books later in the series and was excited to find the one that started it all. Having an interest in quilting makes the book more interesting, but I'm always excited to hear about their adventures as well!

What a wonderful story. It was informative and instructive about quilting as well as an entertaining story. It made me want to pick up my quilting and start working on some pieces my mom had started many years ago. I will be completing some of these projectsbasba result of reading this book.

This is a light read, and an engaging story. First in the series, it sets the stage for the Elm Creek Quilters school which is followed in subsequent books. The writing is pretty simple, not requiring a lot of the reader. But, if you want to have an enjoyable escape, this story will charm you. It is even more enjoyable for quilters.
auntpokey avatar reviewed The Quilter's Apprentice (Elm Creek Quilts, Bk 1) on
I enjoyed learning about each one of the characters. The main story is about relationships, the different kinds and a persons reaction to them. I finished The Quilter's Apprentice saying where can I get this. A week of Quilting/scrapbooking with nothing else stopping me from enjoying the activity and the people I an with. I have already picked up book 2.

Great to spend the afternoon reading in the park.

I can't recommend this book. The writing was ok. The characters felt two dimentional to me. Matt was hardly a character at all. The story is nice and it does move along, but the plot felt artificially sweet. I won't be reading the rest of the series.

Sarah McClure and her husband, Matt, have just moved to Waterford, PA. While Matt finds work with a landscape company, Sarah, an accountant, wants to try something new. With no leads and no offers, she is depressed and frustrated. When elderly Sylvia Compson asks Sarah to help prepare her family estate for sale, Sarah finds new friends, and Sylvia, a master craftswoman, agrees to teach Sarah how to quilt. Sarah's new relationship inspires an exchange of confidences; she learns about Sylvia's "family skeletons" while facing her own difficult relationship with her mother. Patiently piecing scraps of material, the quilters explore both women's lives, stitching details and solutions together slowly but with courage and strength. Chiaverini, a quilter herself, has pieced together a beautiful story in this first novel. Sarah and Matt are a charming couple who prove that problems really do have solutions. Women?daughters, sisters, and mothers?will enjoy it.

If you are a quilter you will enjoy this book. I think the writing is a little simplistic, and the story could use a few more details, but it was overall a fun read. I love quilting, so I really connected with the quilting aspects.

Kind of a thin story, a bit too Polly-Annish for me. The bits about the actual quilting the characters do was lacking in detail, the plot was predictable: unemployed young woman hooks up with a wealthy, sharp-tongued older quilt-maker who has family secrets; helps her resolve them while learning quilting from her; everything ends up impossibly rosy.
