From the day Syd Stowe discovers the four life-like dolls in the local toy store, she begins to notice odd things.

First, there the old man who makes the dolls. He has the same last name as Syd--yet no other Stowes have lived in her small town for years. Also, Syd's new friend, Laura, bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the dolls. And the creepiest thing is that all the dolls are modeled after townspeople who died mysteriously over seventy years ago? What is going on?

Afriad, but too curious not to find out, Syd goes to the deserted (and perhaps haunted) old Stowe house, where her great-grandfather once lived. Can Syd find the answer to the mystery in the house amid dusty old furniture and darkened rooms? Or must she travel back in time? It may be a journey from which she will never return....
