This classic is probably Alexander Pushkin's best-known short story. It is about a young German officer obsessed with gambling, in spite of the fact he does not play. However, one night he hears about an elderly, wealthy woman, a Countess in St. Petersburg, who learned a secret to incredible wealth. She only played three cards and never played again.

Hermann is obsessed with the story and decides to learn the secret from the Countess. He contacts the Countess's beautiful companion, Lizaveta. He conducts a secret correspondence with the young woman. Finally, he asks to meet her and Lizaveta agrees. The rest of the story is startling and imaginative.
