I wanted to like this book. I really really did... sigh. And it wasn't that the stories/essays weren't good, but I got REALLY tired of the name-dropping. Oh, she was friends with Carly Simon, Oh, she was a guest on Oprah, Oh, she won the Gong Show, Oh, Oh Oh Oh Oh.... shut up! *laugh* Some of it felt a little bit over the top. I dunno. I give this one only one eye-roll, but it was definitely annoying in places - I find it interesting because it got rave reviews on Amazon. I guess I'm just an irritable wench, eh?

This is a terrific read, although I found the middle slowed down too much for my taste. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The story of her life is UNREAL!
I was in the floor laughing and crying at the same time.

This was an entertaining (and star-studded!) collection of essays. I enjoyed reading them and while they were not always laugh-out-loud funny, they were deeply amusing. It was a lot of fun to read, and while David Sedaris remains the king of this memoir/essay genre, I found Hillary Carlip to be much more entertaining than Augusten Burroughs. I didn't love it the book, but I really did like it!

This book is cute and quirky. It's a series of short stories recounted by the author is a time-line fashion through the decades. Be prepared for A LOT of pop culture references. If you weren't into television shows of the 60s, 70s and 80s, there's going to be a lot of jokes that fly right over your head. All in all, it's a interesting story of a woman who, despite not fitting into "the mold" (looks, brains, social standing, etc), goes onto have a full and successful life. I'd recommend it to teenage girls that want some inspiration as well as more mature folks that want to chuckle at the past.

Great book. Hillary Carlip is funny and interesting, with a great writing voice. I admit, I got teary when she talked about her dad, as I had a similar experience recently. Really wonderful book.
