I found this book very enjoyable.
The main character is a retired school teacher who now serves on all kind of communities, and does it well. The story begins with the death of Cliff, a former Town veterinarian, who lost his license due to years of alcoholism and making many grave errors 5 years ago. He of course dies during the town's Las Posada parade, and his body is left in the manger, and 2 of the local kids are present, but not able to really identify the killer.
Many clues were given along the way, but still with 24 pages to go, and time to go to bed. I still didnt really know who the murderer was. There were so many possibilities.
Toward the middle, it bogged down. Nothing new was happening and the main character was just mulling things over in her mind and on paper. We heard this all before, and it seemed as if it was not really too necessary.
The kids might be in danger, The book is full of dogs. There are many town character to enjoy.
I do recommend this series.

I wasn't feeling well and I wanted something lightweight. I tried to stomp on any twitch of logical thinking; I honestly don't know why I am so critical of cozies when I can accept all sorts of bizarre things in any other genre. Mary is mostly an appealing character - the retired person who throws themselves into community work and seems to be involved in everything. I've heard characters who are too good to be true called "Mary Sue" and Mary is that. But I liked the characters, especially the kids, I liked the setting. I thought up good reasons why there should be so many dog breeders in such a small town, but the police force...they really need to learn how to ask questions. It's leisurely-paced, it's got cute dogs, and the bad guys get caught. The kids get a puppy! Mary, who has never owned a pet (there are such people??) gets a dog and is happy. So I was happy.
