Mouse is an orphan kitchen drudge in a medieval manor, until the cook's cruelty forces her to run away and she meets an itinerant puppeteer, who (rather unwillingly)takes her as his apprentice.

But the puppeteer is a woman masquerading as a man, and there is an outlaw seeking revenge on her. When he finally succeeds in doing her in, (although in the process he himself is killed) Mouse inherits her name and her puppets.

I wanted more about the puppets and less about the other and more violent plot in this fast-reading story.
