I really have never been "inspired" rave about a book like this one. I hesitated to even get it, but then thought I'd see what all the fuss was about. I'm not into pugs, and thought this would just be another book about a single girl "making it" in NYC. Not at all! I can't really explain how wonderful it is to read about how happy pugs make the girl at the center of this book. She simply can be "healed" by going to Central Park to Pug Hill (is there such a place? there SHOULD be!) and watching the little scrunched bundles of dog running around. I'm about halfway through, but it's such a cool message and unique viewpoint. Not at all your typical binge-drinking and cocaining, working in a PR agency, eating tons of "hobnobs" type of chick-lit. I don't know how it ends, but I already know I'll be sorry to see it go.

I am biased because I am the new owner of a pug. Having said so, let me express that the pug as metaphor for happiness, unconditional friendship and general foolish lightheartedness is lovely. Just lovely. I enjoyed this novel very much. It's a quick read, full of humorous and touching moments. Like a hug from a friend, look for it when you need a smile and a reminder that good times are around the corner.

I loved this book - I had doubts, because I'm not a dog-lover - but the book isn't actually about dogs, really. I could see a lot of my Single Woman In Her 30s-ness in Hope...every overanalyzing, neurotic, random bit of her!

Pug Hill is Definitely SO much more than chick lit...........
For people who 'don't love, or don't know dogs' this wonderful novel Pug Hill has been written by a shiny bright author {Alison Pace} whoses sense of storytelling and narrative skills create intrigue; it is not only fabulously charming; it is a fascinating narrative of the main character's mind 'self talk', and inner and outer life as an art restorer...and as a woman who has learned to find relief and insight about life, action, joy........whenever she walks to visit and watach the pug dogs playing at Pug Hill in Central Park New York.
I rarely read fiction; I started and finished this book, -- thoroughly enjoying the surprises within each chapter...........and I finished the novel not only feeling wise and proud of my respect for what any dog can teach any human being, {if the human being isn't too stubbon to be taught}.......but also so satisfied with how Alison Pace's writing talent and her love for the turn of the phrase, as it wre, kept me interested, entertained, chuckling, and, wondering about the plot outcomes.
I refuse to call it chick lit..........because Pace has mastered a narrative form of writing that SO makes a reader glad for the skill of reading, and enjoying life. Amen.

Set in modern day Manhattan, Hope struggles with relationship, career and family issues. Her touchstone is Pug Hill, where she escapes her axiety about her job, the problems in her relationships and the sheer terror of having to give a speech at an upcoming family event. If you are a pug lover, be aware that the pugs have a central but fleeting role in story. As Hope navigates the pitfall of real life, she find peace by visiting her furry friends. She comes to know several pugs, and the spot description of their antics is sure to generate some belly laughs. The author's slightly sarcastic, witty prose creates genuine characters and makes this an easy book to read. In fact, you won't want to put it down.
You don't have to own a pug to read this book, but it helps. It is so funny and a very good story to boot.
I have tried two books by this author and just can't seem to get into either of them. Her style of writing is way to choppy for me.
Cute book. Easy way to spend some time. Not really about Pugs.
