This is an extremely powerful novel that deals with obsession--in relationships, drugs, even with concept of honor. I don't believe I do the novel justice, but highly recommend women read this. It is about women and, if we let it be, our relationship with just about everything in this world--"property of."

HAVING READ AND LOVED SO MUCH OF ALICE HOFFMAN, I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I WAS VERY DISAPOINTED IN THIS BOOK. I ACTUALLY HAD TO FORCE MYSELF TO CONTINUE READING IT. IN THE END, I'M GLAD I DID, BECAUSE IT DID PICK UP A BIT. I SIMPLY FOUND I COULD NOT RELATE TO ANY OF THE CHARACTERS. I'M GLAD IT WAS NOT THE FIRST BOOK OF HERS THAT I READ...I MAY NOT HAVE READ ANY FURTHER ONES AND MISSED OUT ON A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL AUTHOR.

This book is Alice Hoffman's first novel. It is well written and very different from her later books.

Wow this book is not wait I expected!! Very different and very good! I found myself getting mad at the characters and shocked that it ended the way that it did!

A brilliant piece of literature.

This is a stark and harsh story of city streets, gangs and the influence on the teenagers is frightening, yet uplifting in the life of the narrator.

From the back cover: They are the Property of the Orphans--sullen, sultry, tough girls in mascara and leather who belong to the boys on the Avenue. She wants to belong, too--to McKay, the gang"s leader...brooding, fearless McKay, who claims to care only about honor, not love. No one knows how much she wants him, how far she"ll go to be with him. She doesn"t even know herself...
