I have to confess that when I started this book, I wasn't sure I would be able to get through it. The main character, Violet, was continually losing herself in melodramatic imaginings and seemed very immature. When her father announces that he is getting married, she travels to Chicago with the stated purpose of visiting her grandmother but with the intention of finding her mother, who she thought was in a sanitarium. Through her grandmother and three great-aunts, Violet is pushed in different directions for her life and towards different suitors. During her time in Chicago, she leaves behind her childish ways and starts to figure out the type of woman she wants to be--and the type of man she wants to marry. I didn't want this book to end.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me wondering about the secret of her mother and really showed the differences in the social classes of the time.
I guessed the beau she was going to pick, but over all a wonderfully written book. If you like Christian fiction I would definitely recommend it.

A very enjoyable story. Lighthearted reading, but still has a good message interwoven.
I really enjoyed this book! Lynn Austin once again does a fabulous job of sharing the complexities of historical culture. We catch glimpses of 4 different social circles during the World's Fair in Chicago, 1893. The main character, Violet, does a lot of growing up on these pages, and learns about being who God created her to be. I highly recommend it!

The World's Fair figures in the story because she visits there several times. Also, Violet's grandmother is active in Christian mission activities, and Violet meets people associated with D. L. Moody's ministry.
A perfect mix of mystery, romance and humor. You will enjoy it.

Funny, thought provoking and rich with insight about God's love.
I must say that when I started this book, I really wasn't sure if I would even stick with it to finish it. The only reason that I kept reading it all was because the writing was so good and intriguing. (It's written from first person perspective and you'll remember from my last review that I really don't care for first person perspectives) Usually about mid-way through a book, I can tell where the story is going. With this book, I wasn't sure. I love books that have a happy ending and tie things up neatly. I had no idea how this one was going to wrap up!

I am never disappointed with a book by Lynn Austin. The 1893 Chicago World's Fair is the background for this excellent story of Violet, and her discovery of her true self. Highly recommended.
I did enjoy this book. It is refreshing to read of life with propriety and manners and still have an adventurous character. I also like that real places and events are included in the story with information and descriptions new to me.
Another great book by Lynn Austin. Compelling story, the best ending--always showing real life and how great it can be if you let God lead.
Absolutely adored this book!! The heroine was so funny and sweet! It took me a long time to guess which guy she'd marry at the end, which is unusual for me. I've read so many books I can usually guess the end of a story by the time I finish the 2nd or 3rd chapter. This book was different, though. It had plenty of twists and turns and was so very clean. "A Proper Pursuit" was fabulous!
I have read many Lynn Austin's books. As always, this book is a must read. I couldn't seem to put this book down. It talks about Chicago after the fire and during the World's Fair. Very interesting with a great plot.

I love Lynn Austin, and this book was great. I stayed up late one night to finish it, and it was worth it!
This is a wonderful book. Set in 1893 during the World's Fair in Chicago, the reader gets a wonderful glimpse of life back then. The story revolves around a 20 yr. old girl names Violet & her grandmother & 3 aunts, all of whom are trying to match her up with a suitable mate. One aunt wants Violet to marry for money, one wants her to marry only for love, one wants her to stay single & join the Suffragettes & her grandmother wants her to marry a minister. While Violet has to sort through each of these possibilities, the one man she is drawn to she thinks is not a suitable match. Mixed in with it all is Violet's search for her mother her left her & her father when she was a child. It's a fascinating read & I won't spoil the ended for you. But there are also alot of lessons about what a good marriage is all about. I highly recommend this book.
It took awhile, but turned out to be a very good read!
My first Lynn Austin book- thoroughly enjoyed it. Took a little to get into it, but then couldn't put it down.
This wasn't one of Lynn Austin's best books. If you want a better book by Lynn Austin read "All She Ever Wanted."
