A Proper Pursuit
Author: Lynn Austin
For eleven years, I'd imagined Mother pining away in a stark sanitarium as she valiantly struggled to regain her health and come home to us. Now, with three cold, blunt words, my father had shattered that ethereal image. She abandoned us. It couldn't be true. Why would Mother do such a thing? What was wrong with me that had made her decide t...  more »

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me wondering about the secret of her mother and really showed the differences in the social classes of the time.
I guessed the beau she was going to pick, but over all a wonderfully written book. If you like Christian fiction I would definitely recommend it.

I have to confess that when I started this book, I wasn't sure I would be able to get through it. The main character, Violet, was continually losing herself in melodramatic imaginings and seemed very immature. When her father announces that he is getting married, she travels to Chicago with the stated purpose of visiting her grandmother but with the intention of finding her mother, who she thought was in a sanitarium. Through her grandmother and three great-aunts, Violet is pushed in different directions for her life and towards different suitors. During her time in Chicago, she leaves behind her childish ways and starts to figure out the type of woman she wants to be--and the type of man she wants to marry. I didn't want this book to end.

I really enjoyed this book! Lynn Austin once again does a fabulous job of sharing the complexities of historical culture. We catch glimpses of 4 different social circles during the World's Fair in Chicago, 1893. The main character, Violet, does a lot of growing up on these pages, and learns about being who God created her to be. I highly recommend it!

Set during the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, the novel is about Violet Hayes, a young, single woman who goes to Chicago and ends up finding a Mother that she was told was dead.

The World's Fair figures in the story because she visits there several times. Also, Violet's grandmother is active in Christian mission activities, and Violet meets people associated with D. L. Moody's ministry.

A perfect mix of mystery, romance and humor. You will enjoy it.
