I love this series and particularly enjoyed this book. For some reason, the last one (Salvation in Death) just didn't grab me. There wasn't much interaction with the other supporting characters like Mavis, etc., and I missed it. The whole thing just seemed so dry. For the first time ever, I couldn't get into an "In Death" book and I ended up skimming through much of the second half. I have to admit, I was a bit worried about the series and where it was going. Thank goodness, it was unfounded. Promises in Death more than made up for what I thought was lacking in SID.
This book revolves around the murder of a fellow police officer and newfound love of Li Morris (the medical examiner/coroner), and how the entire crew comes out of the woodwork to rally around him for support and resolution of the crime. There's also a separate storyline running in the background related to the upcoming bridal shower and bachelor party for Louise and Charles (she's a doctor, he's an ex LC - now a sex therapist). All in all, we get to see just about every one of Eve and Roarke's friends/acquaintances - even Webster (the IAB guy that Eve had an affair with (pre-Roarke) and that Roarke pounded on early on in the series) and Crack (the six and a half foot tall guy that works in a sex club and lost a sister to murder - one that Eve solved). What's more, we get to see Eve's continually evolving personal side as Morris leans on her for support. As always, Roarke is there, lending a hand to any and all who need it, but especially to his Eve.
I loved this book because it was so much more than the usual who-done-it. It was personal, with an almost "family" feel to it, and a real pleasure to see how far Eve's come in that department. Also, in the past we've gotten snippets of various supporting characters here and there but were always left wondering about this or that character that wasn't mentioned at all. The thing is, you can't expect them to be covered in every book, but you do wonder what's going on with them when you haven't heard anything for several books. This book was practically a family reunion of sorts and as far as I'm concerned, had it all - heat (how can you not with Roarke around!), humor, sorrow, bad guys, a bit of danger, and nicely solved mystery. What's not to like!

I love this series and nearly always buy the titles new in hardbook. This one is at once sadder and happier than the others. The death of a cop who was Morris' lover affects the squad and "makes it personal". On the other hand the relationship between Dallas and Rourke is smoother. This book lacks the angst about their pasts and the usual shouting matches are absent. They are coming to grips with their pasts and the toll their occupations sometimes take on their marriage.
Side note: Wish I had gotten an invite the bridal shower for Louise! It was totally mag!

The biggest problem with a series that has 28 books and growing is finding new adjectives to accurately describe how much I love this series without sounding boring and repetitive.
Once again, I am treated to a first class ticket into the lives of Eve Dallas and Roark while she investigates the murder of a fellow officer, who happens to be in an intimate relationship with Eves friend, Morris, the Chief Medical Examiner. It doesnt take long for Dallas to uncover a connection in the dead cops past to her and Roarks not so distant past. I love how Eve meticulously discovers each clue and peels the layers back to reveal more. Her instincts are amazing and I am impressed how diligent she is in her approach to finding the truth, no matter how painful.
Eve is determined to find the killer and bring them to justice. She makes a promise to herself, the victim and to Morris and Eve always keeps her promises.
As if the crime plot in the story werent enough, I also was highly entertained with the subplot of Louises bridal shower that Eve has been forcing from her mind for quite a while. Unfortunately, she cant hide from it and not thinking about it doesnt make it go away. While Roark and the guys take Charles to Vegas for his bachelor party, Eve is left at home with the women to do girly things. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her panicked state when she realizes what this will entail and found myself laughing out loud several times at Eves attempts to hide in the house and when that doesnt work, to try to convince Roark to let her come with him to Vegas.
This series has it all and it packs one hell of a punch. Featuring mystery, suspense, intense action, romance and comedy, I wish all of my reading was this entertaining.

I enjoyed this installment in the lives of Eve and Roarke much more than I have the last few. Finally we have some real reason for angst in Eve's little family. We get a good look at the lives and relationships that she's fallen into in the last years. Everyone makes an appearance. There is less of Eve's focus on herself and where she's come from and more focus on the people around her now.

This book is great - and JD Robb didn't do quite as much of the history rehash on Dallas's background, which was a nice change. I just wish Robb could completely move past that whole history rehash, we choose our lives, blah blah stuff and stick with the story. Still, a great read with some really interesting twists.
