Interestingly, for a book called Privateers, privateering is a very small part of this book. The majority of the book is about the political and business movements of the space programs of Third World nations under the thumb of the Soviet Union. As this book was written in the 1980s, the premise that the Soviet Union won the Cold War changes this book from pure science fiction to alternate history. About 2/3 the book takes place in situations not too different from the world as it is (business meetings, romantic assignations, playing politics at parties) with only a 1/3 being science fiction as in space stations and lunar bases so this book is more of a thriller than hard sci-fi.
