Fairly typical, run of the mill vampire romance. Like eating a lot of bad for you candy, you find it hard to stop but you may not like yourself after.

a complex vampire story with a little romance thrown in.sometimes the secondary characters do take over . it was strongly connected to the first book ,IF ANGELS BURN,which i liked even better

I could not finish the book. How many subplots and characters does the author need to write a book? It became way to bogged down with to much needless information.

I just couldn't get into this book. There were too many characters for such a relatively short book and the plot tended to jump around a lot. I ended up skimming the book, not really enjoying it, and just cut to the last chapter to find out how the many plot threads were resolved.

I thoroughly enjoyed her first book but this second one left me cold. 150 pages in and I still didn't really know what the plot was. Too many characters (Did we really need Beanie and her fecal artwork?) and too much wandering around with scenes that didn't build up to anything at all. It was as if the author couldn't decide who or what the book was supposed to be about so she just hopped around hoping something interesting would come out of the mix. It didn't.

I finally got so bored that I turned to the end just to see where it all settled, something I NEVER do. I usually have to read every word of a book, but that would have just been more torture than even the Brethren can dole out.

I like her ideas so I'm still hoping for more from the third installment.

Good read. Book 2 of the Darkyn books follows very closely the end of If Angels Burn - both chronologically and continuing story elements introduced in the first book. Order is VERY important, read Angels first or you will be very confused.

Darkyn
1. If Angels Burn (2005)
2. Private Demon (2005)
3. Dark Need (2006)
4. Night Lost (2007)
5. Evermore (2008)
6. Twilight Fall (2008)
7. Stay the Night (2009)

This was my first Lynn Viehl. I didn't read the first book so for me at first it was confusing - had to catch up on what was what and who was who. She should have had some kind of history of the Kyn in the front or back to get a new reader up to speed. It was a quick read but not one that I couldn't put down for a day. I thought it went a little slow so was somewhat disappointed but not enough to not try another of her books.

3.5 stars. The plot of the story was great. I loved Thierry and really felt for him. I was on his side after witnessing his conflicting needs and heartache. His entire life had been broken apart by his wife's betrayal.
All the Darkyn characters were easy to connect with. It was great to see the relationship between Cyprien and Allexandra from book 1 develop alongside Thierry and Gema's.
Gema Shaw needed more fleshing out for me. I didn't understand her motivations or responses in much of the story. Was she a wimp? Too many of her reactions felt unbelievable. Her living situation seemed unquestioned for most of the book, living with an unloving mother and a resident doctor that had lost his license for being unethical.. If my mother was that awful to live with I would be out that door the second I hit 18 - & Gema is 29!
Nevertheless I really enjoyed reading this book and will continue on with the series.

From the back: Jema Shaw is an antiquities expert. But she moonlights as a police forensic consultant to escape an existence trapped between her domineering mother and the mysterious illness that's plagued Jema for years.

This is the second book of the series. I liked the first, but this one was much better. I liked how the characters from the first book didn't just fall off the face the earth and were part of the storyline - but I also loved the new characters - and although Thierry was introduced in the first book - this was his story with Jema. I liked getting to know Thierry better - knowing his past and how he grew as a character. I am excited to read the third book and see how all the characters so far come together again.

The second in the Darkyn vampire series. This one deals with Thierry who escaped from the Brethren in the first story. And Jema who he meets and wants to rescue from her family.

book #2 you need to read these in order, there is a lot going on and continues from the first book.

The second in the sensual Darkyn series begun in "If Angels Burn." Night after night, Jema Shaw's dreams have become a haven for Thierry Durand. But his nocturnal visits have placed her in danger and brought her between two ancient enemies: the Brethren and the Darkyn. Original

I'd read here at PBS that Lynn Viehl was an excellent author. I couldn't believe my good fortune to stumble upon one of the three books that I now know that she has written, the very next day. This is #2 of her books about Alexandra Keller, a brilliant reconstructive surgeon and her love, Michael Cyprien.
