Another excellent application is dry lint; when this is used, t... more »he edges of the sore should he defended hy a narrow border of simple or mildly stimulating ointment spread on lint; if this is neglected, the lint will adhere to them by the drying of the discharge, and the tender border of newly formed cuticle will be removed with the dressings. It is useless to destroy these granulations with a strong escharotic; they are only reproduced more rapidly. If necessary, the constitutional treatment must be of the same character, tonies, malt liquors, wine, as the case requires. The Indolent or Callous Ulcer is usually found on the lower, extremities of the working classes, the result of neglect and repeated attacks of ulceration. In shape it is usually irregular; its surface is devoid of granulation, or nearly so, and presents a pale, and often a glazed appearance; the edges are thick, rounded, and covered with a dense, whitish cuticle, elevated not only above the surface of the sore, but also above the surrounding integuments; it is not only without pain, but insensible even to rough usage ; the discharge is thin and scanty, and the surrounding parts usually bear evidence of repeated attacks of inflammation, in the dark red, congested, and thickened condition of the integuments. The first object iu the treatment is to remove the thickened, callous margin, which does not permit the formation of cuticle; the second, to produce healthy granulations on the surface of the ulcer. It has been proposed to effect both these objects at once, by destroying the margin and unhealthy surface of the sore by some powerful stimulant, such as a blister.
