The second to last Sir John Fielding mystery. Learn about the world of racing back in his England. A fun read.

One of the better historical mystery series around, and this is one of the better books in the series. Alexander has been compared to A.C. Doyle and Charles Dickens -- pretty high company!

Bruce Alexander wrote a great series of books about a judge -- blind and honest, like Justice herself -- in eighteenth century England. Since he died, the books are not so easily available, but if you can find them you will definitely enjoy them.

This Sir John Fielding novel is almost all about his assistant Jeremy Proctor. While very interesting, I do not feel it is one of the best in this series. There are three plot lines, and two of them revolve around sex.

I have always felt that when an author write a book about sex, especially unnatural sex, then that author is running out of ideas. Fortunately, unlike a number of so-called 'best sellers,' the unnatural sex in this novel is not shoved in our faces.

As for poor Jeremy, in the end things swing out of his control and he gets his just deserts.

i thought this one of the author's best. in this the story
is of Sir John and Jeremy being called upon to investigate the murder of a child about 7 years of age.The story has many surprising twists and turns. I especially appreciate how the author handles the sordid vices, especially with a child, in good taste. he does not sensualize the episode.
There is humor I thought in the character of Deuteronomy
and his horse Pegasus. i also enjoy reading of Clarissa and Jeremy's growing relationship. Makes it where i can't wait
to read his next book.

Well written and researched historical fiction.
