NPR's Scott Simon writes, through the lens of his own experiences in Sarajevo, a compelling novel about a high school girl, a Muslim, a star basketball player, who is caught up in the horrors of ethnic cleansing and becomes a sniper for the opposition.

This was a harrowing tale of the siege of Sarajevo as seen through the eyes of Irena Zaric who was a Muslim high school basketball star before the start of the war. The story just seemed so futile by the end. Perhaps that is what Scott Simon wanted to illustrate, but I think he did it with a pretty heavy hand.
