Prehistoric Coastal Communities: The Mesolithic to Western Britain (CBA Research Report)
Prehistoric Coastal Communities The Mesolithic to Western Britain - CBA Research Report Author:Martin Bell This volume provides ground-breaking new evidence about prehistoric life in Britain. Intertidal sites provide a wealth of evidence for the Mesolithic period in Western Britain. Finds come from anciently submerged forests and coastal wetlands. The results of a recent major project at Goldcliff and other sites in the Severn Estuary are presented. ... more »There is also a study of late Mesolithic and early Neolithic shell middens at Prestatyn, North Wales. Goldcliff has produced artefact assemblages of stone, bone, and wood and outstandingly preserved human and animal footprints. Each site has a rich environmental sequence with evidence for Mesolithic burning at several sites. Exceptionally well-preserved new sites enable earlier finds to be reassessed, providing a new picture of the nature and seasonality of Mesolithic activity, and the Mesolithic/Neolithic transition. The uniquely well-preserved remains of these coastal sites will add to existing overviews of prehistoric settlement and culture in Britain, as well as setting new standards for investigating intertidal and coastal archaeology.« less
