As a natural childbirth educator in training and a normal birth advocate, I cannot endorse this book. While there is some very good information, there is a definite bent toward extremely "medical" childbirth. This makes sense as it is by the ACOG.

I have to agree that this book leans to the extreme of a medicalized childbirth and pregnancy. If you would like a book that goes into more depth regarding pregnancy, I recommend a book like "The Pregnancy Book" by Dr Sears or "Your Pregnancy Week by Week". If you would like a book that goes into more depth on options for birth and postpartum care, I suggest "The Birth Book" by Dr Sears, "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by Henci Goer, or the book on pregnancy written by Peggy O'Mara.

If someone is having a complicated pregnancy, this would be a good book to read. For the vast majority of women who have normal, healthy pregnancies and (could have) normal non-medical births, this book isn't applicable.

While this book has useful information, it addresses a medicalized pregnancy & birth, and includes some "old doctor's tales" which are not supported, and in some cases are even shown to be dangerous, by research.

As a companion to this volume, I recommend Henci Goer's book Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities (ISBN 0897894278). It will help you sort out the facts from the opinions.
