James M. reviewed Prayer, Power Petticoats: Lessons in Faith from the First Ladies from Martha Washington to Laura Bush on
While I appreciate the author's efforts to show the role faith played in the lives of the first ladies, I found much of her writing to be a bit of a reach. The unfortunate truth is that we don't know much about the background of some of these women. It would have been better to admit that and emphasize what is known, rather than try to create a faith message where there wasn't one.
The other problem with this book is the author's obvious bias toward some First Ladies. She went out of her way to praise the spirituality of certain women who obviously lived, and continue to live, lives devoid of Christian character.
