1 Chronicles Chapter 4 is nothing but genealogy. Or is it? In 1 Chron 4:10 there is mention of a man named Jabez, who says a prayer. And then the chapter goes back into genealogy. Who is this Jabez and why is his prayer so important that it would bring a genealogy recital to a full stop?
The author analyzes what Jabez's prayer means and how it reflects our own lives. Just imagine what miracles could happen if you would just ask for God's Blessings like Jabez and so many others in the Bible have.
The book is full of inspirational moments that he has witnessed or participated in first hand while using the prayer of Jabez. HOWEVER, many of these related situations are only half of the story. The author states that the Prayer of Jabez has led him to help many people. People who were about to divorce come back to tell him later that evening that they've changed their minds and will work toward a happier marriage. We are never told of the final outcome though. There's another story where he relates that in one night they "Saved" over 30 people. But did those people continue to live the life of a Christian after that? We don't know. And neither does the author.
This book uses the LORD's name in vain by DEMANDING at least 30 conversions in one night. Or when he DEMANDS at least 100 people show up for an event. That's not a Blessing; that's man's vanity. Numbers don't mean as much to God as a man's sincerity.
In the end, this is just a Christianized version of "The Secret".

A tiny little book with a powerful message. I was so deeply moved by the message that I bought a copy of the book for my daughter. It seemed as if the questions she was asking me were answered as I read the book.
I highly recommend this for anyone who believes. Sometimes it is the simplest of messages that carries the greatest impact.

Even well-versed Biblical scholars might be perplexed if asked about Jabez, a little-known man listed in 1 Chronicles, chapter 4. Yet his simple petition is the cornerstone of The Prayer of Jabez and has become a call to live a more "blessed life" for countless readers.
The prayer is a simple one: "And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.' So God granted him what he requested."
In an era where many Christians shy away from anything that smacks of "name it and claim it," author Bruce Wilkinson alleviates misgivings by putting the prayer into perspective. Wilkinson, founder and president of Walk thru the Bible Ministries and a popular speaker for Promise Keepers, writes in a persuasive, conversational style that will woo even the most cynical reader. He has used the Jabez prayer for more than 30 years, and testifies enthusiastically to the changes it has wrought in his own life. Wilkinson challenges readers to recite the Jabez prayer every morning and keep a record of the changes that occur. The power, he emphasizes, is not in the prayer itself, but "rather, the power is in what you believe will happen as a result of the prayer, and the action you take." Wilkinson makes a convincing case.

When taking this prayer to heart, it can make a difference in your life. My sister and I give copies of this book to friends and family as gifts. If needed the guidelines within the Prayer of Jabez is a good way to jump start your daily prayers. I highly recommend it.

I thought this was quite enlightening. It definitely is a starting point, not a do-all, be-all like the author seems to suggest. I think this is a good thing to incorporate into daily prayer. Like a few other reviewers, the author's demand for numbers of people is a bit extreme and possibly vain. But I think that at least he is asking and hoping. Again, I think this is a starting point, because I think God will provide, we just need to respond. It is definitely a template for structuring prayers and asking for God's grace.

I enjoyed this little book. It was quick to read but I took a little longer since I took breaks to let things sink in. I do not think this book is about greed as other reviews have said. The author is just saying it is okay to pray for yourself and ask for his blessing. Many people have mentioned him praying for a certain number of people to show up to an event but I think they are looking at that wrong. He was praying for a successful teen ministry - for teens to come and find Christ. I don't think that is selfish.
This book is very simple. It is about a little known little prayer that the author discovered and how it changed his thinking and his life. When I read this book I was planning to pass it on like I do with most books but it actually became one of very few books that I decided to keep in my own library so I can read it again. I also decided to get the devotional companion book.

Dr. Bruce Wilkinson, president of Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, takes readers to 1 Chronicles 4:10 to discover how they can release God's miraculous power and experience the blessings God longs to give each of us. The life of Jabez, one of the Bible's most overlooked heroes of the faith, bursts from unbroken pages of genealogies in an audacious, four-part prayer that brings him an extraordinary measure of divine favor, anointing, and protection. Readers who commit to offering the same prayer on a regular basis will find themselves extravagantly blessed by God, and agents of His miraculous power, in everyday life.

Dear Reader,
I want to teach you how to pray a daring prayer that God always answers. It is brief - only one sentence with four parts - and tucked away in the Bible, but I believe it contains the key to a life of extraordinary favor with God.
This petition has radically changed what I expect from God and what I experience every day by His power. In fact, thousands of believers who are applying its truths are seeing miracles happen on a regular basis.
Will you join me for a personal exploration of Jabe? I hope you will
