Amazing to me how this man can make a small county in a little visited state become such an enchanting experience. If you like this guy's style of writing (he DOES have a Ph.D. in English, after all) you'll love this book.

A must for anyone who yearns for an in-depth study of Chase County, Kansas.

"prairyerth" refers to the type of soil on parts of the Great Plains (which also includes "blackerth", so it's not a typo. Author quotes approvingly the Kansas politician who said "I don't think much of a man that doesn't know more than one way to spell a word."
