Then we ... more »need to put in some little word at the beginning, to prepare the way for the subject of " is." So we say, " It is pleasant to walk." This " it" is called the Preparatory It. The word there is used in the same " preparatory" way, in such a sentence as, " There was a stag in the forest." Here the real subject of " was" is " stag," but it is placed after the verb, instead of in the usual place of the subject, while " there'' prepares us to feel that something is coming.
