Ryden Malby has just graduated college and has her life planned out for
herself - from the perfect job that she is certainly going to get to the
perfect apartment that she will be moving into. But things don't go as as
planned for Ryden and she doesn't understand why. After getting passed
over by her nemesis, Jessica, for the perfect job, Ryden goes on a string
of interviews and is turned down for each one. On top of being obviously
unemployable, Ryden has been forced to move back home and deal with her
crazy family: her wacky-try anything father who is always thinking up
plans to start a new at-home business that never really takes him in the
direction he wants; her very strange but comical little brother, Hunter,
who enjoys licking the heads of kids at school; her grandmother, Maureen,
who is obsessed with her own death and speaks of it frequently ; and her
very patient, even tempered mother who rounds out the whole nutty clan.
Ryden has her hands full at home and hates the fact that her life has not
turned out as planned. The only person she can turn to is childhood
friend, Adam, who always makes everything better. When Ryden's luck
suddenly changes one morning after spending the night waiting to bail her
father from jail, she realizes that everything she thought she wanted may
not be what she needs. Post Grad tells a great story of life after college
and has many laugh out loud moments that readers will undoubtedly enjoy.

Of course, nothing seems to be working out according to plan. Ryden's arch-nemesis, Jessica, steals her job right out from under her, she is forced to move back in with her wacky family, and she doesn't know how to deal with her extremely attractive neighbor, David, who is twelve years her senior.
Through all of this, Ryden finds solace with her best friend, Adam. Adam is also facing some tough decisions; go to Columbia University and become a lawyer, or follow his dream of making music. Adam is also coming to terms with his feelings for Ryden, and she is unsure of how to move forward with their relationship.
Emily Cassel has written a fresh and funny novel about making it in the real world. Ryden and Adam are lovable characters, while Ryden's dysfunctional, yet supportive family members are laugh-out-loud funny.
Since Cassel's protagonist is a little older, high school students may not be able to relate to the problems she is facing. I think that seniors and college grads will love this novel. They will be able to identify and appreciate Ryden's struggle to make it on her own.
Also, be on the lookout for the movie version of POST GRAD. I'm sure it won't disappoint!
