...Men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses...just and example of Parker's biting wit. Either you love her or say 'huh?'

I love Dorothy Parker. She coined the phrase, "Men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses" Its a complete collection of her poems, stories and reviews. She is well worth the read.

Short stories from an American classic author. Parker is always piercing and witty.

Great collection: poetry, stories, reviews. The modern age, on a skewer. Indexed.

One of the most quotable of 20th century authors, Dorothy Parker has attained a wide ranging and enthusiastic following. This revised and enlarged edition, with an introduction by Brendan Gill, comprises the original 1944 PORTABLE, as seclected and arranged by Dorothy Parker herself and including all her most celebrated poems and stories, along with a selection of her later stories, play reviews, articles, book reviews from ESQUIRE, and the complete CONSTANT READER, her collected NEW YORKER book reviews.

I didn't know much about Dorothy Parker, besides a few of her famous bon mots, before I picked this book up, but I feel as though I know her much better now. This is not a happy book, but it's a funny book. The short stories in particular are well-told, and tend to run along the common themes of marriages and relationships gone wrong. The poems I found tedious after a while. The play and book reviews are very interesting, and I would have enjoyed reading more of them...Parker seems to have been a very intelligent and insightful reviewer.

The cover art on this Penguin Classics edition adds an extra element of enjoyment--the back cover and flaps are covered with cartoon men and women quoting lines from the stories and poems. This is a terrific collection from a talented but complicated writer.
