I'm just beginning to get into Catherine Coulter books, so it's a little difficult to do a comparative review. I'll just do this one as a stand-alone.
Overall, I found this audio to be an entertaining listen. I did find the character and plot a little implausible at times. I guess you have to remember that this is a fictional story, and not real-life. The clever, taunting villain seemed to "go down" too easily, with no great finale. Here again, in real life you seldom find your villains only after a high-speed car chase, jumping from the car to a waiting helicopter, dropping down to the roof of a train hurtling through the mountains, amid a torrent of bullets. You usually find the "bad guy" hunkering down unshaven, in his underwear, and scratching his butt in some abandoned warehouse.
I would purchase this book for no other reason than its being narrated by Dick Hill - he has the ability to make a "so-so" book sound spectacular (which is why I prefer audiobooks). In the first chapter, one of the characters is trapped in a cave, Dick Hill's rendition of the panic experienced by this character is especially noteworthy! You come out of that chapter feeling like you yourself were trapped!
In addition to the regular characters of Savitch and Sherlock, we have the appearance of two new characters Ruth and Dix .... maybe heading for their own series of books? Who knows.
Summing everything up, I think this audio is worth a listen, but I wouldn't rely on the printed versions. That's just me! You make you decision, and let me know!
