I really liked this book. It reminded me of Kahled Hosseini's books in that it teaches you about people you might never have known anything about. This book follows three generations of the same family but it is not laid out in the typical fashion. The first half of the book reads like a fiction novel, following Sally through her life. At that point you are brought into the history of her other family members. I thought it was beautifully written and an interesting piece of history. Slavery did not just live in the United States, that's for sure.
