Well, the back cover claims this is in "the story-telling tradition of Maeve Binchey"---I wouldn't go that far. But it was a well written book, a bit over the top with flowery language and Scottish dialects, but a good story. Glenna is a small town doctor who was put up for adoption at birth, and was taken in by a cruel and pious couple who made her childhood a misery. Kate is her teenage daughter, who is caught between her crazy-at-heart dreams and her mother's inflexibility. And Isabelle is Glenna's birth mother, who was betrayed and deceived by her lover abd forced by her parents to give up her child. When Isabelle's high-profile husband dies, she is finally free to search for the child that was wrenched from her. But Glenna blames her for her desperate childhood and won't have anything to do with her. Kate, though, hopes that this mysterious grandmother might be the answer to her own prayers.
