Wonderful book. What a strong woman and what hardships these people had to go through. Found myself missing the Picture Maker when I was done with the book. Want to read the sequel now! Fascinating to learn about the agriculture, clothing, and ways of life of these Native Americans, Inuit and Vikings.

This was a very interesting read about early Native American history. Strong female main character. I highly recommend this one and the sequel "Dream Weaver."

Interesting "pre-historical" novel about a woman who is born into a powerful clan of North American women and is gifted with the ability to etch drawings that foreshadow the future.
Her people call her \"Picture Maker\", for her drawings seem to fortell the future.
*** This is a great book about Greenland.
An engaging story of a woman's journey in early North America.
This book gave great insight on the trials and burdens the early people had to endure on a daily basis.
This novel was an emotional roller coaster for me. It was a great journey of discovery for the main character but also a lot of heart ache for her that made me cry for her. I finished the book in under a week. It wasn't a can't put it down book but it definitely kept drawing me back to see what would happen next.
I really enjoyed this story of a young girl who is taken captive by an enemy tribe and manages to escape to a new tribe where she is welcomed. Her fear of being found drives her to run further at the first opportunity and she finds herself in a society where she feels women are not much more than slaves. Their ways are different and their life is harsh, but she learns to survive. Then another opportunity to enjoy a more full life as a wife rather than a second wife arises. But her new life is even stranger than the one before. The ways of her new family and their kind are beyond understanding. The oldest son of her husband will not accept her. She has a child and the little girl cannot understand why her older brother doesn't love her. The land is so harsh that her new family is in danger of starving year after year. Then she makes a huge mistake and endangers herself and her family and is forced to go away. Her husband says she can go no where without him. So she begins yet another life. But this time she is not alone, she has finally got a true family of her own. Even her husband's oldest son has acted as her protector and admitted that he was wrong about her. So they travel together toward a new and better life.
I LOVED this book and am currently reading the sequel Dreamweaver. Highly recommended.
