A truly interesting story of an artist, a town, a nation, and a masterpiece of modern art. The author does a wonderful job of setting the scene in 1930s Spain, a country tormented by a brutal civil war, and then brings in Pablo Picasso and the work he painted for the Spanish pavilion at the Paris World's Fair, immediately after the Basque town of Guernica was air-bombed by Germans sympathetic to the Spanish Fascists. This book illuminates a time and a place that most of us know very little about, and shows us why the painting "Guernica" still resonates today.
