Helpful Score: 1
After enjoying the first book so much, I looked forward to the next book. So far (I'm in chapter 9), this story is drivel. I hope it improves, but I'm not sure Putney can pull this out of the morass. Now that I've finished this book, I can attest that I rolled my eyes at least 10 times through the ridiculous coincidences and run-on drivel.
At 21, Rafael Whitbourne, Duke of Candover, fell in love with and became engaged to Margot Janos, 13 years ago while they were in London. Rafe believed another gentleman's disparaging remarks about Margot and they broke up. After that, Rafe learned that Margot and her father were killed in France.
Now, Rafe finds that Margot did not die but has taken up a life as a spy in Paris. Rafe is instructed to convince Countessa Magda (really Margot) to continue her work for a short time longer. Of course, he does and the kicker is that they must work together. Naturally, with a beautiful woman, she has other men interested in her, specifically Robin, a fellow spy, and former lover.
The kindest score I can offer this overblown story is 3 stars. Having read 4 of the 7 in this series, I don't plan to finish the other stories. Half of them were very good and half were barely readable. I plan to cut my losses now.
